No-one can imagine how soul-destroying it must be to not have a home.
It’s something many of us take for granted in the 21st Century in the UK.
So, imagine how it feels for those people who, through no fault of their own, are left out in the cold night after night, no shelter, no food and little comfort.
Last year more than 40 brave souls ditched the safety of their homes to stretch out on the streets of Blackpool for Streetlife’s Big Sleep Out.
And on March 31st, Happy’s charity partner for 2017 is looking for volunteers to do the same, so they can experience a life on the streets – for one night only.
The venue for the event will be outside the Night Shelter on St John’s Square, central Blackpool, where supporters of the homeless charity will gather for the night.
Last year’s event raised more than £11,000 for Streetlife and organisers are hoping to eclipse this in 2017 following the launch of the 2020 campaign by Happy last year.
Lindsay Guest, one of the organisers and who is taking part again this year, said: “The Big Sleep Out gives people only a small insight into the struggles people face on the streets. Homelessness isn’t an organised event, it isn’t a lifestyle choice and every day is a constant struggle for those people who find themselves in this situation.
“This is why Streetlife is so important for these people, to provide support when they need it. Last year’s event was great and this year we want it to be bigger.”
