Feeling appreciated at work comes in various ways.
A simple “thank you”, an e-mail from a colleague, an unexpected perk or maybe even a party in the office.
At Happy HQ we take things a step further.
Every Friday we gather to appreciate and celebrate our work, take a break from our busy projects and high five those Happies who have done something to help you out or you have noticed them doing something pretty awesome.
It takes a matter of seconds but the feeling can last much longer.
Appreciating everyone’s hard work runs through the veins of every Happy.
Today is National High Five Day. It falls on the third Thursday of April and originated in, guess… the USA.
Here’s a little history lesson for you though because the notion of giving someone a high five is quite a new one, even though people have been doing it for hundreds of years – it wasn’t known as a “high five” until the 1970s.
The first high five occurred between Dusty Baker and Glenn Burke of the Los Angeles Dodgers in Dodger Stadium on October 2, 1977, the last day of the regular season. In the sixth inning, Dusty Baker hit a home run off Houston Astros pitcher J.R. Richard. It was Baker’s 30th home run, making the Dodgers the first team in history to have four hitters with at least 30 home runs each in a single season.
And in that moment the high-five was born. It happens every day all around the world and always just a way of saying thanks or for celebrating an event.
It even has health benefits as the gesture releases happy hormones and a sense of belonging to a team.
Which is generally why we do it. We recommend you try it.
