Giving Back in Burnley: Helping More People Find Support

 Posted on: 11th June 2026

When Freeflow Counselling Service’s Charity Executive Director, Edel McGinn, shared that the charity had received 44 new enquiries in just 8 days following the launch of their new website, we were genuinely blown away.

In 2025, Active Lancashire reported that 20% of people aged 16 and over in Burnley are affected by mental health problems. Some of those people may have been sitting with something for weeks, months, or even years before reaching out. If a clearer website, better messaging, or a more obvious call to action helped remove a barrier for them, that's a meaningful outcome.

Since 1997, Freeflow Counselling Service has been supporting people across Burnley and Lancashire. Based on Yorkshire Street in Burnley town centre, the charity provides free and low-cost counselling services for adults, couples, children and young people, ensuring support is available to those who need it most.

Their work extends beyond their counselling rooms. Through their School Counselling Services, Freeflow provide pupils with a safe and confidential space to explore their thoughts and feelings with a qualified professional. They also support education professionals through wellbeing sessions, non-managerial reflective supervision and confidential opportunities to be able to process the emotional demands of their roles.

From the outset our vision was to help Freeflow tell their story, showcase the incredible work their team delivers across our community, and make it easier for people to understand and access the support available to them when they need it most.

Edel said "We are incredibly grateful to Karen, James and Jenna for their support, generosity and belief in our mission. From the very beginning, they took the time to understand who we are, what we do and the people we support.

They have brought our vision to life beautifully through the website. They also developed a story around our School Counselling Service that truly reflects the impact it has across Lancashire.

As two Burnley organisations supporting one another, this partnership has meant so much to us. The response since launch has been fantastic. We received 44 new enquiries in just 8 days, which is unheard of for us and demonstrates that more people are finding us and accessing the support they need."

At Happy, our purpose is to spread happiness. Whilst that often means helping businesses grow, it also means giving back our time, skills, and expertise to support organisations that make a positive and meaningful difference within our community.

Giving back and creating social value has always been an important part of who we are. It's also why supporting organisations like Freeflow aligns so closely with our values and our commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Wellbeing.

Chief Happy Karen Lambert says "Giving back has always been an important part of who we are. We already support a number of organisations across Blackpool, and when we met Edel and learned more about the incredible work Freeflow does in Burnley, we knew we wanted to help.

We'd heard so many positive things about Freeflow over the years and, after meeting Edel, it was impossible not to be inspired by her passion and genuine care for the charity she heads up.

What makes this so rewarding is the ripple effect. Freeflow helps people who are looking for support. Behind every enquiry is a real person reaching out for help, and that's what makes this so special. Hearing that 44 people reached out within the first eight days of launch is incredibly humbling.”
