I t doesn’t feel like it was just Monday that I was shaking in my new office shoes at the prospect of starting my work experience at Happy. But everyone here has been so welcoming and approachable.
I wish I could go back now and tell myself I had nothing to worry about! I mean, how scary can a group of people called ‘Happies’ really be?
I’ve learnt many valuable things: how to write blogs, how to keep up with deadlines, what the digital marketing world entails, and what it’s like to work in an office environment. Although I probably picked the worst week in British history to be stuck inside a stuffy office... Just my luck!
Adjusting to blog writing was tricky. After just finishing university, my brain was still in dissertation-writing mode. So naturally, the overly elaborate language and giant paragraphing was still embedded into my psyche. But challenging myself to try a new writing style was enjoyable. And it was fun to exercise my creativity, rather than sticking to a strict guideline. There is no right or wrong to how you approach blog writing; that’s probably my favourite thing about it. And thanks to the helpful feedback I received, I was able to adapt and improve my writing within just the space of a week. I’ve also grown more confident in my own talent, which is always a plus!
Prior to this week, I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my English degree. No pathway that was particularly screaming out to me. But now, I think digital marketing is definitely the route I want to pursue. Participating in real-time projects has been both exciting and insightful, and I’d love to do something similar in the future.
I’ve met some extremely talented people, and I’ve been inspired by the amount of creativity I’ve witnessed within such a short space of time. It’s interesting to be behind-the-scenes, witnessing how a basic brief is turned into a completed piece. No two ideas are the same, so there is never a dull moment! It’s always fun anticipating what the next project will entail, and what approach we will take.
This has been a truly rewarding experience, and I’m thankful to Karen for letting me hang around for the week. I’ve acquired skills that will be useful to me for the rest of my career future. But I’ve also acquired a few pounds from all the office snacks that are hard to resist (whoops)…
