Happy to be Celebrating 100 years of Apiezon the Product That Helped Split the Atom

 Posted on: 28th May 2026

We’re delighted to announce that we have been working alongside M&I Materials on the marketing and design for the 100 year celebration of their globally renowned product range Apiezon. (pronounced Ap-ee-ay-zon)

M&I Materials is a multi-million-pound UK manufacturer of specialist materials and advanced engineering products, including the globally recognised Apiezon® range. They supply industries such as aerospace, nuclear medicine, motorsport, electronics and scientific research in more than 65 countries worldwide.

The Apiezon product range has helped shape some of the most significant scientific breakthroughs, from splitting the atom to supporting modern space exploration. Originally developed in 1926 by British chemist Bill Burch, Apiezon has long been at the forefront of innovation, supporting advanced research and engineering applications across the globe. Its products have been used by organisations including NASA, Boeing and Honeywell, as well as CERN, home of the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland.

In the 1930s, Apiezon products were used by Nobel Prize winner John Cockcroft and his colleagues at the University of Cambridge during experiments that contributed to the first successful splitting of the atom, a groundbreaking moment in scientific history.

Today, the products are still manufactured in Manchester by M&I Materials and exported worldwide, supporting advanced research and industrial applications across aerospace, cryogenics, food production and other industries.

For Happy, this partnership has been about marking a centenary, as well as helping to tell the story of a product with an extraordinary legacy, and ensuring the people behind that legacy are part of the celebration too.

Working closely with Marketing Manager Gemma Shackleton, and her team at M&I Materials, we have supported the development of the Apiezon centenary campaign through customer and market research, press activity, commemorative creative and long-form storytelling. All of which captures the memories, experiences and reflections from people who have worked with Apiezon over the decades.

Alongside the campaign strategy, we have created a range of centenary design assets and supporting collateral to engage customers and partners around the world, while the in-house marketing team has developed dedicated landing pages, merchandise, video content, photography and LinkedIn campaigns as part of the wider celebrations.

Chief Happy Karen said “It’s been a privilege to work on a campaign celebrating such an extraordinary product. When you realise Apiezon has supported Nobel Prize-winning research, modern space exploration and splitting the atom, it really does feel out of this world.

Personally, it’s also been lovely to reunite with Gemma after first working together 20 years ago. There’s been a brilliant energy throughout the collaboration and the partnership even earned the affectionate nickname ‘Hapiezon’.

Most importantly, this project is about people. The scientists, engineers, researchers and manufacturing teams behind Apiezon all have stories worth celebrating, and we’re incredibly proud to help tell them.”

Design & Brand Building

Marketing is bit like those huge, swirling flocks of starlings you see from time to time. Individually your brochure, email, ad, meme or gif may not change the world.

But when you join them together and ensure they’re all heading in the same direction, you have the power to stop people in their tracks.

We design communications that help build a consistent brand and convert more leads to sales.
