Blackpool is well on its way to becoming the capital of kindness.
With a little help from a Secret Millionaire, David Jamilly – and Happy – the town’s inaugural Kindness Convention was a hit across the resort.
The concept is simple; make Blackpool a kinder place by getting residents to carry out 100 acts of kindness; examples include sitting and chatting with an elderly person on a bus journey to donating unwanted toys to a local hospice.
Blackpool Fairness, an arm of Blackpool Council, strives to make society fairer by working with a number of charities and third-sector organisations to promote fairness and kindness across the resort.
David Jamilly founded The Good Deeds Organisation in 2005 which promotes global good deeds and kindness. His commitment to the cause resulted in the first Kindness Day in the UK in 2010 and it now has its own event every November 13th.
Happy was one of the first to sign up to the 100 Acts of Kindness when it was initiated in 2013 and have worked with Blackpool Fairness since, including building their website.
As well as promoting the event through a PR and social media campaign, Happy produced the video which opened the convention and has provided bite-size snippets of the film with inspirational quotes from Blackpool school children who quizzed David on kindness.
More than 300 people descended on the town’s Winter Gardens for the event in June, with a performance from school children on what it means to be kind, debates on how to promote kindness, a key note speech from a member of the House of Lords and a pledge to deliver 100 acts of kindness over the coming months.
Chief Happy, Karen Lambert, said: “It’s a privilege to continue to support Blackpool Fairness and do our bit in spreading kindness around the town. Even the smallest acts of kindness can go a long way and make a real difference in the community.”
